Gwangju Kyung Sang Junior College, the predecessor of Gwangju University, was established in 1981 with Dr. Kim, In-Kon's founding spirit of inheriting the historical authenticity of the early Korean private academies established as a way of saving the Country during the critical dawning period. It was reorganized as a four-year college in 1984 and again in 1989 raised to the status of university with the new name of Gwangju University. At present, the University has 22 department in two graduate schools (Kyung Sang Graduate School and the Graduate School of Mass Communication), and 10 divisions and 8 departments in four undergraduate colleges, where over 1,5000 students are studying. As the home of the democratic intellectuals who will brighten the Nation's future, Gwangju University will gain reputation as a university for the community and for the world.


Jan. 5, 1974 Gwangju Inseong High School was established and authorized.
Dec. 11, 1980 Gwangju Kyung Sang Junior College was founded and authorized.
Dec. 15, 1980 Dr. Kim, In-Kon the Founder, took office as the First Dean of Gwangju Kyung Sang Junior College.
Dec. 7, 1983 The school was authorized as four-year Gwangju Open College.
Mar. 2, 1984 Prof. Lee, Jae-Won took office as the Dean of Gwangju Open College.
Sep. 28, 1984 Seongsilkwan was completed.
Sep. 28, 1985 Keugkikwan, Central Library, Art Hall, and the Second Library were completed.
Sep. 28, 1986 Bakinkwan and the Stadium were finished.
Dec. 22, 1986 Hosim Academy, the educational foundation, was founded.
Mar. 1, 1988 The school name was changed into Gwangju Kyung Sang College.
Dec. 30, 1988 Kyung Sang Graduate School was established and Authorized.
Mar. 1, 1989 Dr. Seong, Rae-Woon took office as the Dean of Gwangju Kyung Sang College.
Oct. 28, 1989 The school was raised to the status of university with the new name of Gwangju University.
Mar. 1, 1990 Dr. Kim, Lan-Soo took office as the First President of Gwangju University.
Aug. 2, 1990 The Student Union Building was completed.
Jul. 31, 1991 The Computer Center was completed.
Feb. 19, 1993 Haengjeongkwan was completed.
Sep. 3, 1993 The Graduate School of Mass Communication was established and authorized.
Jun. 20, 1997 Hosimkwan, the lecture and research complex, was completed.
Mar. 1, 1998 Dr. Shin, Kuk-Bom took the office as the Third President of Gwangju University.
May. 13, 1999 Gwangju University was selected an one of the excellent universities in the 99'
Educational Reform Promation supervised by the Ministry of Education
Jul. 1, 1999 DSC was founded.
Dec. 5, 1999 KUBIC was founded.
Mar. 1, 2000 IEIC was opened.
May. 13, 2000 The 20th Anniversary of the University
Jul. 18, 2000 Gwangju University was selected as one of the excellent universities in the 2000 Infrastructure Establishment Enterprose for Design Development supervised by the Ministry commerce, Industry and Energy;
sep. 28, 2000 Kwangu University was selected as one of the excellent universities in the 2000 Educational Reform Promotion suporvised by the Ministry of Education.
Nov. 18, 2000 University Dormitory was completed.
Feb. 15, 2001 Gwangju University was selected as a recipient of the Ministry of information and Communication's Fund for information and communication related departments.
Mar. 1, 2001 Dr. Lee, Jae-woon, took the office as the 4th President of Gwangju University.
Mar. 20, 2001 The Tourist Idustry Design Innovation Center(TIDIC) was established.
Jul. 2001 The doctoral courses were authorized by the Ministry of Education.
Oct. 2001 The Gwangju University Internet Broadcasting Station was launched, and started the survice.
